General Blood Sampling Via PICC Lines

PICC lines can be used to obtain blood samples from your patients.  In order to draw a sample, first ensure that the catheter is patent by aspirating for blood return. The PICC should be flushed prior to sampling, and a small sample of blood should be withdrawn and discarded. Once patency is confirmed, proceed with blood sampling.  It is important to flush the catheter after you have obtained your sample, as described under “Device Flushing Protocol.”

General Blood Sampling Via Implanted Ports

Generally, blood sampling can be performed via an implantable port. The port should be checked for patency and flushed prior to sampling, and a small sample of blood should be withdrawn and discarded.  After sampling, it is important flush the port again, as described under “Device Flushing Protocol.”
